Search for Bourne—Day 12
July 31st, 2007
Here’s a complete spoiler for the answer to today’s challenge in the Ultimate Search for Bourne.
We’re in New York City now (the metropolis that was the solution to yesterday’s puzzle), and the briefing tells us to head back to Dater Notes to check Nicky Parson’s (buckeye2099) profile. As I guessed yesterday, the photo of a napkin with a rough map with Broadway on it (and a kiss) scribbled on it is the key. It’s named with one of Bourne’s earlier aliases—John Michael Kane (as a reader pointed out in yesterday’s comments; thanks John!). The briefing explicitly tells us to key the photo’s URL into the image processor.
Applying filter C reveals the solution: Madison Square Park. Paste this into the communication panel, and we’re done.
Edit: Note that commenters discovered that the photo can be displayed without the “www,” but the image processor requers it. Use the URL
http://www.daternotes.com/images/profile_photoAlbum/
JOHN_MICHAEL_KANE.jpg(with no line break, of course) in the image processor if you want to get it to work. You can also right-click on the link and choose “Copy Shortcut” or “Copy Link Location” or your browsers equivalent and paste it into the image processor.
If I ever said it looked as if the puzzles were getting harder, I take it back. This is absurdly easy!
Since we’re in a new city, we only get one camera. I went with the obvious choice: Madison Square Park.

The image filter is sensitive. Although you can access the image in a browser without the “www” at the start of the URL, the image filter will not recognize this path.
A bit frustrating…

OMG - that was really mean to need the www. I swear, I pulled up a map of broadway and was trying to find intersections that matched the angle by hand, then on a whim I did a web search for a cheat instead. I had guessed Central Park, but hadn’t made it far enough south to see the other yet. How lame - they need to fix their technology or give us a link so it pops up as www.daternotes.com. Who ever types the www anyway for any site?

Has anyone else had a problem getting cameras? I don’t get one every day. For example, even after solving today’s puzzle, I didn’t get a camera to place.

GringoStar–Good to know! Personally, I’ve found the best bet is to copy the URL straight from the address bar while viewing the image, then past it into the image viewer. Or you can right-click on the link to the image and choose “Copy Shortcut” or “Copy Link Location” and paste that in.
Jennifer–I don’t type the “www” either, though I do let Firefox type it for me with CTRL-Enter most of the time. In these spoilers, I’m going to make sure there’s a hot link to key images, and I’ll add one to today’s post, too.
Peter–I had that problem once, but I still managed to get a “sighting” the next day. My wife, on a different platform, has had the problem all of four times. Every time, she’s gotten at least one sighting, possibly more. So maybe not getting to place cameras manually is lucky! (I rather doubt it, though.) Camera placement is still the most ambiguous part of the game.

Hi Laurens–
A few seconds before that shows up, you’ll see the agent handle, an anagram of Bourne’s name, flash on the screen. I just put up a spoiler for Day 13 that has all the information, in case you can’t find it.
