My kid played GTA 3 at the age of two.

And she was GOOD!

Since she's moved on to games like WoW, but she LOVES Dora (anything) on the PS2 and http://www.jumpstart.com

She's 4 now.

She's the sweetest thing, vibrant happy and loved.

And she's better than my wife at Lego Star Wars.

That is some good parenting advice when it comes to video games. I also think the positives outweigh the negatives for a young child to become involved in video games at an early age, as long as they are appropriate games and the child participates in other activities to learn as well. Video games can be great for building relationships too if they are played with the proper intentions and attitude.

Alec, I want to sincerely thank you for this insightful and most helpful essay. The post over on my blog stimulated some very useful responses, but you have gone above and beyond here.

I'm especially grateful for the personal and self-reflective way you explain the choices you have made for your daughter. I shared these with my wife, and she agrees that you have helped us think about all this much more carefully. So thank you. Your daughter is a lucky girl indeed.
